Leon Loreaux interrogates the role of the artwork in the world of the viewer. By presenting a juxtaposition of the original object against the painted representation, playing with the effects of optical illusions, or provoking traditional painting genres, Loreaux challenges the viewer to question essence of what is perceived. There is often an element to his art which explores the idea that the digital and the tangible are increasingly, inextricably intertwined.
By assimilating familiar motifs and recontextualizing them, Loreaux often aims to expose the artifice inherent in all forms of representation. However, at other times, his work is more immediately visual rather than conceptual, attempting to capture the beauty or atmosphere in a scene or person.
Leon Loreaux graduated from Sydney College of the Arts in 2001. He predominantly works in Oil on Canvas, but is also an accomplished sculptor. His work is included in private collections in Australia and internationally.
